All Black lock Ali Williams has been diagnosed with a fracture in his right foot and a decision on whether he participates at the Rugby World Cup will depend on his rehabilitation.
Williams complained of foot pain following a time trial two weeks ago but a MRI scan last Wednesay did not show any problems.
After the pain continued Williams had a further bone scan in Auckland yesterday which revealed an undisplaced fracture of the right navicular bone.
All Blacks doctor John Mayhew said today that Williams' injury was relatively uncommon among rugby players.
"Once we have clarified the most appropriate management of the injury, we will be in a better position to estimate when Ali will be able to return to full training."
All Blacks coach John Mitchell said it was too early to make any decision about whether Williams would be replaced in the Rugby World Cup squad.
"Once we have a better idea of the situation, we'll be in a better position to make a judgement.
"There is no timeline, but we do have options available to us in the position should we require them."
Williams' condition would be monitored and managed by the All Blacks fitness staff who would consult with leading orthopedic surgeons.
