SCOTLAND 32 JAPAN 11
Right wing Chris Paterson saved his side from possible humiliation with a try in each half as Scotland struggled to overcome Japan 32-11 in their World Cup pool B opening match.
Paterson also kicked a penalty and a conversion as the Scots, quarter-finalists in each of the four World Cups so far, looked unconvincing against a spirited Japan side.
Tries to Paterson and lock Stuart Grimes helped the Scots to a 15-6 halftime lead but the Japanese then struck back with a fine try to left wing Hirotoki Onozawa in the corner to reduce the margin to four point.
Paterson gave Scotland breathing space with his second try in the 66th minute and number eight Simon Taylor then clinched a bonus point with his third international try. Replacement Simon Danielli scored a try in the final minutes to give the Scots a flattering victory margin.
Scotland led Japan 15-6 at half time.
