Rugby World Cup: Mobile phones running hot after All Blacks win

The mobile phones of rugby fans were running hot on Sunday night as the All Blacks orchestrated a 33-10 win over Argentina.

Within minutes of the final whistle, over 6,400 text messages were sent and more than 1,200 calls were made.

Telecom says that during the game, text, voice, and data traffic increased by 313 percent, 282 per cent, and 142 per cent respectively compared to the Samoa v Fiji clash the previous weekend.

Key moments in the All Blacks' match had fans texting up a storm - Colin Slade's injury coincided with 6,900 texts being sent, while Kieran Read's try prompted nearly 4,4000 texts. All Blacks fans were sharing in the excitement following Nicolas Vergallo's sin-bin, racking up 5,000 texts straight away.

Telecom has collaborated with Vodafone at Eden Park to install 255 new antenna and 13 kilometres of cable. Coverage on the XT network was increased to deliver service to the cloud on Queens Wharf, while capacity was doubled at the two main sites that serve the Auckland waterfront.
