PARIS - South Africa coach Jake White paid tribute to beaten finalists England after his side lifted the World Cup with a controlled 15-6 victory at the Stade de France today.
England fought valiantly but South Africa always had that little bit of extra quality and deservedlywon their second world title, following their success on home soil in 1995.
But White had a word of praise for England, who no-one expected to reach this stage following their comprehensive 36-0 drubbing at the hands of the same opponents in the group stages.
"A lot of people expected them to not be as competitive as they were tonight," said White. "It shows how difficult World Cups are. We had to play well to win it."
White also paid tribute to his won players who proved without doubt they were the finest all-round team at the tournament.
"I'm sure everyone at home is rejoicing - congratulations to the players they've been incredible ambassadors for the country," he said.
The difference between the two sides was largely South Africa's defence, which held firm for long periods of pressure and even narrowly kept what looked to be a certain English try in the second half that could have changed the nature of the match.
"That's what wins World Cups," White said of his team's defence. "They (England) were a bit unlucky not to get that try.
"I'm really over the moon and it's a massive win for us as a group."
