Samoa's World Cup hopes have been dealt a huge blow with the withdrawal of veteran hooker Trevor Leota and reports that lock Henry Tuilaga is about to do the same.
Leota pulled out because his English club, Wasps, will not pay him while he is away, and Samoan officials are investigating reports Tuilaga is withdrawing for the same reason.
"We haven't been told officially yet, but we expect that's the case," Samoan coach John Boe said.
Samoa earlier released a statement confirming the withdrawal of Leota, one of that country's best and most recognisable players.
Boe said Leota was desperate to play in the World Cup, but had been forced to pull out for financial reasons.
He has been replaced by Mahonri Schwalger.
"We are very disappointed that Trevor was unavailable for the cup tournament," Boe said.
"He is a very talented and committed player who also makes a considerable contribution off the field in his role as a senior member of the team.
"However, Mahonri has produced some outstanding performances during the mid-year tour and we welcome his inclusion in the team."
Samoa reached the quarter-finals in 1991 and 1995, and the quarter-final playoffs in 1999, but face a tough task advancing beyond the pool stage this time after being drawn alongside South Africa and England.
The tournament starts in Sydney on Friday, October 10, with a match between holders Australia and Argentina.
