World Cup outsiders Fiji have been inspired by underdogs' Penrith's NRL triumph and Fijian Paulini Curuenavuli's strong performance in the Australian Idol rock music singing competition.

Play-maker Waisale Serevi said many of his team-mates were so excited by Curuenavuli's versions of Tina Arena's Chains that they voted for her by text message to qualify for the next round of competition.

Serevi said the dual success was a good sign for the Fijians, who need to topple either the higher-ranked France or Scotland to qualify for the quarter-finals for the third time.
