Australia make winning start to World Cup

SYDNEY - Defending champions Australia made a winning start to their World Cup campaign on Friday with a 24-8 victory over Argentina in the tournament's opening match.

After Elton Flatley had landed two early penalties, wing Wendell Sailor scored Australia's opening try, barging past three defenders after a move sweeping both ways across the field.

The Wallabies, who led 14-3 at halftime, lost David Giffin at the restart when the lock landed heavily on his back and was stretchered off the field.

Argentine fullback Ignacio Corleto gave his side some hope with a try in the corner before Wallaby wing Joe Roff put the result beyond doubt with Australia's second try.
