IRB Sevens champions New Zealand clinched an important 24-14 victory over England to advance to the semifinals of the IRB Gold Coast Sevens at Skilled Park.
Frank Halai showed no signs of his injured ankle from yesterday's opening game to score the first try, bursting clear of some weak English defence to scoot 80 metres under the posts.
England's Chris Cracknell responded for his side two minutes later after a quick recycle close to the tryline gave the big forward room to outstretch the tackler and get the ball over.
Tim Mikkelson scored his side's second try on the halftime hooter to put New Zealand in front 14-7 at the break.
Isoa Damudamu touched down for the English after the interval but Halai crossed for his second try with two minutes to go.
