Rugby Sevens: England win in golden point

England have won the Wellington leg of the sevens world series with a golden point victory over Kenya in the final at Westpac Stadium tonight.

Neither team was expected to be in the showpiece game but after England upset Samoa 21-19 in their semifinal and Kenya topped New Zealand 19-14, the stage was set.

Kenya were the crowd favourites but England had plenty of heart and after they levelled up the scores at 19-all after the hooter in regulation time extra minutes were required.

With the game on the line Sam Edgerley found his way to the chalk and England celebrated an unlikely win.

Kenya had two men sent to the sin bin during the final, which didn't help their cause.

Earlier in the night, New Zealand beat Samoa 17-7 to finish third and that result helped them extend their overall lead in the world series standings.

The next leg of the series is in Las Vegas next weekend and New Zealand will be without Kurt Baker for the tournament due to a hamstring problem and could be without captain DJ Forbes who suffered a knee injury in the game against Samoa.

More will be known about Forbes' injury tomorrow.

In other results, Australia beat Scotland 22-7 in the plate final, Canada beat Fiji 28-19 in the bowl final and Wales won the shield with a 26-21 win over Tonga.

Fiji's failure to make the cup quarter-finals was the first time they hadn't got out of their pool in 14 years on the world series.
