The Fiji Rugby Union plans to proceed with the Fiji International sevens tournament in January despite the ongoing crisis gripping the country.
Fiji Rugby Chief Executive Timoci Tavanavanua says they are in the process of inviting teams to reassure them the tournament will continue as planned.
Fiji has not hosted an International sevens tournament since 2000, prior to the failed coup attempt by George Speight.
The New Zealand Government will hold discussions with sporting organisations scheduled to attend tournaments in Fiji.
The Government has banned Fijian sports teams and sports people at all levels from coming into the country, unless international sporting obligations require otherwise.
New Zealand Rugby Football Union chief executive Chris Moller told NZPA the unioin's understanding was that tournaments such as the sevens and the Pacific Nations Cup, would be regarded as international sporting tournaments.
The plans for next month's tournament are the first steps towards re-establishing Fiji as a host venue for the IRB World Sevens Series.
