The All Blacks Sevens have somehow pulled off a miracle to reach the Cup final in Hong Kong.
Despite some shoddy passing and lethargic attack, New Zealand scored a late, extra time try to Regan Ware to head South Africa 12-7 in their semifinal. The Blitzbokke's search for an elusive
Hong Kong title thus continues.
Tim Agaba opened the scoring for a tactically superior South Africa, which favoured the kick-chase option in the slippery conditions. It appeared to work, but they could not put the Kiwis away and led 7-0 at the break.
Coach Gordon Tietjens called for more decisive attacking decisions and that command bore fruit when Lewis Ormond tied it up out wide off a long Gillies Kaka pass. The latter converted to send the clash into extra time.
South Africa could not capitalise on the sinbinning of Isaac Te Tamaki and Kurt Baker uncorked a fine heads-up play to put Ware in from a crosskick after some rugged collisions at the breakdown.
