Former All Black Dan Carter has shared on social media a cheeky farewell letter from a young French fan.
Carter is hoping to end his career with French club Racing 92 on a high by beating Irish side Leinster to win the European championship on May 11.
The world's highest profile first-five has built a large and loyal fan base in France after joining Racing 92 after the 2015 World Cup as rugby's best-paid player, on more than $2m a year.
Next season, he is heading to Japan.
In translation, the touching hand-written note from his young fan reads:
"Thank you for having signed my ball. It's my first autograph. I am a fan of rugby. I even make my mother shout when I play with my little brothers in the corridors of our house. I know that you are leaving for Japan, I wish you all the best for the future. Remi."
The PS, though has the kicker that obviously tickled Carter's fancy:
"How much did New Zealand pay the referee in 2011? The question is from my papa; me, I always respect the decision of the referee."
As everyone knows, New Zealand beat France 8-7 in the World Cup final in Auckland.
