Rugby: Markgraaff denies rift as he steps down

Andre Markgraaff has stepped down as the Springboks' assistant coach to focus on his technical-committee role.

According to the South African Rugby Union, Markgraaff asked to have his portfolio readdressed after meeting Springboks coach Harry Viljoen and the general manager of national teams, Butch Watson Smith.

Markgraaff dismissed speculation in the South African media of a rift within the Springboks coaching staff following the recent drawn series against France, the replacement of captain Andre Vos by Bobby Skinstad, and the omission of flanker Rassie Erasmus from the squad for the upcoming Tri-Nations.

Considered a good technician of forward play, Markgraaff was briefly Springboks coach in 1996-97, but was fired following racist remarks. He had been recalled by Viljoen as assistant coach last year.
