League: Calm heads to lead by example against Knights

The experience and defensive steel of new Warriors back-rowers Ryan Hoffman and Bodene Thompson will be crucial in helping the side's rookies in today's season opening match in Newcastle.

Centre Solomone Kata gets his first taste of the big time but should Sam Tomkins fail to overcome twin hamstring concerns, right wing Tuimoala Lolohea will wear the No1 jersey. That shift would then open the door for Ken Maumalo to also start his first NRL game on the flank, leaving the Warriors' backline full of attacking potential but light on experience.

The presence of Hoffman and Thompson on either side of the ruck should instil confidence in the side's debutants.

"The best way to lead is by example and we've let the young guys that have come in know that we're not expecting anything more than what they did to get themselves here," Hoffman said.

"It's about making sure that we're all doing the same things together and those boys should go really well."

NRL assignments don't get much tougher than an afternoon clash at a packed Hunter Stadium, which can be a daunting prospect for the uninitiated.

Knights' fans are particularly vocal and at this early stage of the season you can bank on them being in full cry.

"It certainly is [a difficult environment] and it's a proud league area," Hoffman said.

"But it's just green grass, white lines and goal posts.

"All we can control is our job and I'm sure the young guys are going to be focused on that."
