The Scottish Rugby Union is today expected to offer former Warriors and Kiwis fullback Kevin Locke the chance to leave Super League club Salford and make a switch to the 15-man code.
The Manchester Evening News reports that Locke is set to meet with SRU officials and discuss a contractoffer which could see him switch to rugby in time to press for a spot in Scotland's World Cup squad.
"We plan to have a chat with Kevin and are ready to make him an offer if he wants to move to rugby union," SRU chief executive Mark Dodson said.
"It is down to him to decide what he wants to do. If he does, then we will take things from there."
Locke is eligible for Scotland through his father, and if he did make the switch to rugby, would play in the Scottish League and be fast-tracked into the national side.
Salford owner Marwan Koukash has given his permission for the SRU to open talks with Locke.
The 25-year-old joined the Red Devils midway through last season after parting ways with the Warriors.
In recent weeks he has been battling for fitness, after a groin injury forced him from the field early on in Salford's 6-52 home defeat to St Helens earlier this month.
