Former Kiwi league international star Tawera Nikau had to have his leg amputated at Waikato Hospital on Wednesday night.
Nikau, 36, broke his leg last month when his Harley-Davidson motorbike and an oncoming car collided on a rural road near Huntly. Nikau had had at least five operations on the
femur that was broken.
NewstalkZB reported today that complications with the injury forced surgeons to amputate his leg below the knee on Wednesday night.
Many of his fellow Kiwis and football team mates are rallying to help Nikau.
A spokesman for Nikau declined to comment on the report "out of respect for the family" when contacted by NZPA.
A Waikato Hospital spokeswoman was unavailable for immediate comment.
