Rugby League: Latrell Mitchell kicks incredible field goal to beat Melbourne Storm in NRL

Sydney Roosters centre Latrell Mitchell has almost single-handedly beaten the Melbourne Storm as his stunning field goal kicked the Roosters to a 21-20 golden point victory.

But what was even more impressive than the 40m strike that flew through the posts at a great height to break Storm hearts was that of the Roosters' 21 points, he managed to score 13 of them and gave a try assist as well.

That try, scored in the 29th minute by fullback James Tedesco was all Mitchell bar the finish as he dummied inside to then palmed off Storm centre Curtis Scott, before stiff-arming Suliasi Vunivalu and throwing a one-handed pass to Tedesco.

It was an individual effort for the ages.

And when the Roosters had the ball in great field position on the first set of extra time, thanks to a line break from Sitili Tupouniua, the Roosters faked the pass to Cooper Cronk and hit Mitchell, who nailed the booming drop goal.

It sent the Nine commentary team into raptures, with Matthew Thompson screaming "Have you seen anything like that before? From 40m he kicked the field goal!"

Phil Gould responded with a simple "That is outstanding"

It wasn't the first time the Nine team lost it over the freakish centre, with Brad Fittler earlier describing him as a "once in a generation talent," while Gould also called him "extraordinary".

Mitchell, who had a running battle all of last year with Storm opposite Will Chambers, dominated the match and didn't mind sticking it to the Storm fans with his celebration after kicking the winner from 10 metres in from the sideline.

"I just turned around — I knew it straight away," Mitchell told Fittler.

"I just wanted to rub it in to be honest — I have been copping an earbashing all night but that's just passion.

"I'm a passionate player and it just shows."

His winner came after the Roosters appeared to be down and out late in the match.

The Storm roared back from a 20-8 halftime deficit to level the match at 20-all in the 51st minute thanks to two tries in three minutes to Tui Kamikamica and Scott but simply couldn't convert their chances and Brodie Croft had a fair crack at a field goal in the dying minutes of regular time, which he pushed just right of the uprights.

Mitchell was denied a second try on the night when the outstretched boot of Vunivalu stopped him from getting to a grubber kick for his second.

Mitchell opened the scoring in the fourth minute as he got on the end of a Roosters backline movement and they extended their lead through front-rower Jared Waerea-Hargreaves soon after before the Tedesco try.

The Storm hit back late in the opening half through a try to speedy winger Josh Addo-Carr, which started their rally, a rally that would ultimately fall just short.
