SYDNEY - Kiwis international Tony Puletua has replaced disgraced captain Craig Gower as skipper of the Penrith Panthers for the 2006 National Rugby League (NRL) season.
One of the leading contenders to replace Gower after the halfback was sacked following a drunken spree at a celebrity golf tournament on the
Gold Coast last month, Puletua was chosen ahead of former Kangaroos hooker Luke Priddis.
Penrith coach John Lang confirmed Puletua's promotion last night, handing the test veteran the ultimate accolade in his 10th year at the club.
Although born in Auckland, the towering second rower came up through Penrith's junior ranks.
He made his first-grade debut in 1997 and has been a developed into a mentor for younger players at the west Sydney club.
Puletua, who is signed with Penrith until 2009, was an obvious choice, according to Lang.
"Tony is a natural leader, not only on the field, but off it. He'll have everyone's support."
Puletua said he was honoured to inherit the captain's armband albeit in unfortunate circumstances.
"I'm looking forward to it -- it's every first grader's dream.
"I see it as a challenge and all I can do is my best," he said before adding "Craig will still call the plays on the field".
