Man dies after rugby league game

A man has died following a game of rugby league yesterday.

Edward Shane Hei Hei of Invercargill was found unconscious after taking part in a local match.

Team mates and emergency services administered CPR on the 36-year-old but he was later pronounced dead at Southland Hospital.

Police enquires are continuing and the matter has been referred to the Coroner.

Hei Hei was a veteran player for Southland and had represented New Zealand Maori and New Zealand A, as well as playing in Australia in the Queensland Cup competition.

He also worked for Southland Rugby League as a coaching and development officer.

Shocked friends have posted messages and tributes on his Facebook page.

Charly Harvey wrote: "The last post from one of the greatest guys I ever met, will miss you".

Roxi Campbell said: "This is so sad RIP Eddie Haturini-Hei Hei. Definitely a game not to be forgotton." (sic)

Meanwhile Ben Ormond posted: "prays and thoughts with your whanau" (sic).

Underneath his last Facebook post, in which Mr Heihei urged his friends to come to watch the league game, those who knew him have been paying tribute.

Charly Harvey said: "The last post from one of the greatest guys I ever met, will miss you."

Keith Putt posted: "I remember growing up with you wishing I was half as good at league as you. You will always be remembered by friends and whanau for the legend you are. Rest easy."

Louise Ngakoti said: "I don't fricken believe it my heart is hurting .. For you bro n your whanau.

"All I can see is you playing rugby league over here in Aussie when I used to come n watch u play in Wynnum far rout can't believe it..[sic]"

Tributes have continued on a family members Facebook page.
