League: Rapira signs with Huddersfield

New Zealand Warriors prop Sam Rapira will be joining the Huddersfield Giants on a two-year deal from 2016.

The Giants announced the signing this afternoon, with Rapira set to move overseas in November after he completes the NRL campaign with the Warriors.

Rapira has played 169 games for the Warriors after debuting in 2006, being one of the club's most long-serving players. He has also been capped 13 times for New Zealand.

"After 10 years at the Vodafone Warriors, I can't wait for the new challenge of playing English Super League. I decided to sign up with the Giants because I've heard positive things about the club and they have shown a lot of enthusiasm in getting me over there," said Rapira in an official press release.

"I'm really grateful for this opportunity and I look forward to working with Paul Anderson and the boys. The thought of moving to the other side of the world with our two daughters is a bit daunting but our friends and family have been supportive throughout this process and we are excited to experience a new country and culture."

Huddersfield head coach Paul Anderson said Rapira's move was a great addition to the Giants.

"Sam is a winner and a tough competitor who will enjoy the conditions here after he has finished his outstanding NRL career. He had options here and in Australia so we are delighted he has joined our club in the face of a lot of other possibilities."

The Hamilton-born prop had earlier announced his intentions to leave the Warriors for the Super League, and the Giants were the ones to ink his signature through until the end of the 2017 season.

Huddersfield are currently in fourth on the Super League ladder and have former Warrior Ukuma Ta'ai on their books.
