Retired Springbok wing Chester Williams wants to be part of the new Super 14.
Williams is now an assistant to the new coach of the Boland provincial side, Jerome Paarwater, and is looking for a position on a Super 14 bench when the expanded competition starts in 2003.
"There are
a couple of positions that will become available. The Cats will need a new coaching staff, as will the fifth South African team," Williams said.
Williams is also one of the assistant coaches of the national sevens team, so there are no doubting his qualifications.
But the former-Bok realises he must still pass through the coaching mill and is prepared to work outside the spotlight.
"I don't see myself as a head coach just yet," he said. "I am still learning and I would like to continue to do that at Super 12 level. I don't want to tie myself down as a backline coach either."
Williams gets his first taste of Currie Cup rugby as a coach on Saturday when he accompanies Paarwater and Rudy Joubert to Ellis Park for Boland's match against the Lions.
Joubert will relinquish his job at Boland next week to take up the coaching position at Cardiff.
