Racing: Winning turn for Freespin?

Not many horses with a last-start 10th next to their name pick themselves quite as easily as Freespin does at Cambridge tonight.

The minor meeting is the calm before the storm as the likes of Adore Me and Gold Ace are set to invade Cambridge for the Flying Mile next Friday night, but there will still be money to be made and Freespin looks one of the best bets.

He finds himself in the near-perfect race six tonight, the third leg of the Pick6 and first leg of the second quaddie.

Freespin has always been at his best when able to get off the gate, work up a head of steam and run the sprint out of his rivals.

All of those factors are in play tonight as he has drawn the front line over his favoured 2700m and with few drawn inside him tough or talented enough to get in his way.

Punters who see a -540 formline and need some more convincing should consider his recent opponents.

Three starts ago he took on Lancewood Lizzie and Beyond The Silence, the next start Gold Ace and last start was here off a 30m handicap in a better field.

To make that even more painful, he settled near last as Ohoka Punter strolled to the lead and kept rolling, meaning Freespin never even got a cart into the race to put himself in contention.

So his recent runs are best forgotten but go back four starts and he downed Hot Mach, more than the equal of his main rivals tonight.

On a night when good things are hard to find, Tony Herlihy has two horses who look to have a class edge over most of their rivals.

Ctheballerina was green but still enormous in second on debut and if she can keep her mind on the job early from the ace tonight she will be awfully hard to catch.

Tormenta won well enough fresh up at an Alexandra Park Tuesday meeting last start to suggest he can overcome a second-line draw again in race eight.

The first leg of the Pick6 provides one of the better-value options for the night in Monterey Jack, who has been either luckless or racing in far stronger fields so gets the perfect draw against a handy pair in Cullect The Gold and Could A Dunit tonight.
