Wazn't Me is the worst-named horse in racing.
It definitely was him who caused havoc in the $10,000 Evansfield Harvey Evans Steeplechase at Rotorua yesterday.
First he dropped rider Stacey Redman, who suffered concussion. Then he charged through the birdcage gate and collided with a car in a street outside,
leaving the driver with whiplash.
In the process he almost certainly cost Woodifhecould the winner's cheque by cutting across his line, crashing him through the wing of the fence and out of the race.
Wazn't Me "took on the birdcage gate and completely demolished it," said chief stipendiary steward George Lawson.
Wazn't Me, who ended up on the roof of the car, is probably lucky to be alive. He was led back to the course and had his chest stitched.
In a separate incident in a volatile race, Michelle Hopkins was taken to hospital after crashing and being galloped on when her mount, Bit Of A Myth, clipped heels between the two fences of the stand double.
X-rays at Rotorua Hospital revealed there was no damage to her back where she had been struck, but late last night she was having her shoulder x-rayed for a second time.
Hopkins was concussed and will be stood down for a mandatory three weeks, as will Redman.
