Racing: Top jockey in positive drug test

Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michelle Payne has been stood down from riding after reportedly testing positive to a banned substance.

Racing Victoria Stewards will conduct an inquiry today into the results of a urine sample provided by Payne at the Swan Hill Cup meeting on June 11.

Stewards have received a report from Racing Analytical Services Limited confirming the presence of Phentermine, a prescription appetite suppressant and banned substance in accordance with Australian Rule of Racing 81B, in the sample provided.

Dual-licensed Payne had two rides at the meeting in question, both on gallopers she also trains.

Payne was reportedly advised of the RASL's findings and stood down from riding in races and trackwork on June 23.

In 2015 Payne became the first female jockey in history to win the Melbourne Cup, steering Prince of Penzance to a memorable victory.

Today's inquiry commences at 11am.

The 30-year-old was born in Victoria, but dad Paddy was a Taranaki boy.
