Lightly-raced mare Southern Speed gave jockey Craig Williams and co-trainers Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas their first Caulfield Cup when she raced away with the $2.5 million feature yesterday.
The four-year-old, a last-start fourth to Cup favourite December Draw in the Group One Turnbull Stakes (2000m), overhauled Green Moon, who
led for home, to beat him comfortably.
Tullamore, trained by Gai Waterhouse, was a gallant third in the 2400m Group One event.
It was only Southern Speed's 12th start and her first win beyond 1400m.
"Just sensational," an elated Macdonald said.
"As soon as she got to a mile [1600m]-plus [this campaign], she's showed her form.
"She's not in the Melbourne Cup, we've done our job."
It was Southern Speed's fourth career win and has amassed prize money in excess of $1.85 million.
Trainer Peter Snowden has declared champion three-year-old Sepoy "in the zone" for the Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington on Derby Day after a dominant win against older horses in the Caulfield Sprint.
Sepoy made it nine wins from 10 starts in Saturday's 1100m Group Two feature and controlled the race from start to finish with jockey Kerrin McEvoy likening the effort to a barrier trial for the colt.
Favourite Love Conquers All ($6.00-$4.80F) easily won the Group 3 Betfair Stakes at Caulfield yesterday for the Hawkes stable.
Patiently ridden by Darren Beadman, Love Conquers All was switched to the centre of the track and ran home strongly to win by a length and a half from fast finishing Albert The Fat ($10-$11) and Pinwheel ($6.50-$7.00-$6.50).
