"We think he's pretty smart," said Fieldes, who also prepares classy Marea Alta, and it was difficult to disagree.
Others who impressed on the day:
Maysophia: Came off a debut win and got posted three wide. Battled pretty well to be not far from the placegetters and needs only betterluck.
Royal Queen: Eye-balled both sides, but got in front again and won well. "She's the toughest horse I've had to deal with and I nearly gave up on her," said Jim Campin. That toughness transposes to races.
Uncle Shayne: Had to push through a narrow gap to challenge late at Hastings and did well to be narrowly beaten. Can win again soon.
Showcause: Finished last in his race and, ridiculous as it sounds, got galloping only after the line and finished the next 200m off well. Stay on side.
No Excuse Maggie: Copped a fair run on the speed. Fought very hard to be just beaten and will win another nice race soon.
The Terminator: Made ground nicely down the outside and watch when he gets over longer distances.
Ballroom: The form on paper looks ordinary, but had little room to improve down the inside in the home straight. Don't be surprised by a quick form turnaround.
Off The Top: Made up a huge amount of ground from last on the home bend to finish not far from the guns in the last. A distance beyond 1400m is going to suit.
Singapore Sling: That Tauranga win was no fluke.
Zonza: Ran home strongly like a horse on the way to making a stayer. Wait until the blinkers go on.
Arnold: Watch if the rain arrives again.
