Racing: In form Single Currency looms as upcoming banker

Cambridge trainer Chris Wood may still get to the Riccarton cup carnival with comeback galloper Single Currency after all.

Woods has a $40,000 1400m undercard event pencilled in for the Bachelor Duke 6-year-old who bounced back to his best with a dominant win at Te Rapa on Saturday.

The success in the listed Timpson Family Trust Sprint (1200m) came in just Single Currency's second race back since an operation to remove bone chips from his near-fore fetlock.

The injury surfaced soon after he returned from running fifth to Platinum Princess in last year's Coupland's Bakeries Mile, his chances scuttled by raceday rain.

"I could pop him on a plane to go to Christchurch on Saturday, or I might and sit and wait for another sprint at Te Rapa next month," said Wood.

"I'll just weigh up my options. We'll trot him up in the morning [Monday] and see what he looks like."

Despite the horse's long spell on the sidelines, Wood was confident of success on Saturday.

He said Hamilton equine surgeon Greg Quinn had performed a masterly procedure to remove the chips and his staff adhered to the recovery recommendations to the letter.

Wood also gave the gelding plenty of time to rebound from his promising fresh-up fifth, without much luck in the running, at Wanganui on October 20.

"I was very confident with him; he'd worked super in his previous two gallops and the rider had a handful of horse both times," said Wood.
