Racing: Impressive work puts Kalamata in the frame

Kalamata is right in the reckoning for the Soliloquy Stakes at Ellerslie after an impressive workout at Matamata yesterday.

On a good plough, Kalamata shaded Apowwow at the end of a solid 1200m in 1:17.8, the final 600 in 37.

Kalamata won a trial last week and looks ready for a big
effort in the three-year-old fillies' feature.

Race rival Dragon Maiden had the pace on throughout 1000m in 1:00.4, the final 600m in 36.2. Stablemate Kainui Belle also worked well preparing for the Wellington Thoroughbred Breeders' Guineas, running 1000m in 1:03.4, the 600 in 36.8.

Black Muscat completed his preparation for the Captain Cook Stakes with a smart 1200m in 1:19.5, the final 600 in 36.6. Stablemate Marie Clairewent through 1200m in 1:21.5, the 600 in 37.5.

The pair give Paul O'Sullivan a strong hand in the Trentham feature.

Clifton rounded off her Wellington Guineas preparation with 1000m in 1:07, the 600 in 39.5.

Tintagel and Quick Lip, rivals at Te Rapa on Monday, turned in a smart workout over 1200m in 1:16.8, the 600 in 35.8.

Others headed for Te Rapa that worked well over the same distance included Our Kitty, who recorded 1:16.4 and 36.2 and Maroofity in company with Catlan, 1:18 and 38.6.

Milan and Etoile du Nord got through their work well to record 1:16.9 for 1200m, the final 600 in 37.3. Abracadabra looked promising over 1000m in 1:04, the final 600 in 36.4.

Ubiquitous, whose first start since returning from Melbourne will be the Guineas Trial at Te Rapa on Monday, shaded Ubiety at the end of 1200m in 1:18.2, the 600 in 37.5.

Daktari ran the last 1000m of his work in 1:02.5, the 600 in 39.2.

Normandy Boy completed his fast work for Ellerslie most pleasingly at Takanini yesterday.

On a fast plough, Normandy Boy ran the last 1000m of 1200 in 1:4.2 and 600 in 37.3.

Bank Note looked well ready to resume racing when running 1200m in 1:20, the last 600 in 38.3.

Ready For Action covered 1000m in 1:4.4, the last 600 in 38.2.

Dragon Tiger was kept to 1:7.2 for 1000m and 41.1 for the final 600. He should be tough to beat tomorrow from his No 2 draw.

Tee Cee sped 1000m in 1:1.5, the last 600 in 38.3.

Swigilo made smart time for a maiden, running 1000m in 1:3, the closing 600 in 37.4.

At Pukekohe, the following worked on the fibre.

Miss Millbay passed the 800m in 54.8 and completed the 600m in 39.6.

Keshava worked past the 800m in 53.2 and finished the 600m in 39.4 in preparation for Te Aroha next week.

Kapai Sun worked on the No 2, covering the 800m in 52.2. and finishing the 600m in 39.4.

Single Sun looked in excellent order at Avondale, as he prepared for his weekend engagement at Ellerslie.

Working on the outside of the firm course proper Single Sun ran 800m in 49.9 coming home the last 600 effortlessly in 36.5.

He kicks off his new campaign in the progressive 1400 tomorrow. Race rival Benny Biggs was keen over 800m with stablemate Mick Bailey recording 49.7 and reeling off the final 600 in 36.4. Benny Biggs is now trained by Davina Waddell.

Also on the course proper Sweet Dancer worked solidly from the 1200 returning 1:19.0 posting 38.3 for the last section.

Awaywego worked well over 800m alongside Lowella Grace taking 52.4 and the final 600 easily in 38.0.

An un-named maiden and Melba shared honours at Te Rapa. On a firm No.1 grass, the Pompeii Court filly led Melba after a smartly run 1000m in 1-01.2, the final 600m strongly in 36.8.

Duty Call worked off quietly over 1200m in 1-19, speeding up the final 600m in 36.7.

Estuary produced excellent work yesterday at Cambridge, when preparing for Te Rapa on Monday.

Galloping on the in side of a firm No 2 grass Estuary with trainer Ross Elliot in the saddle travelled sweetly throughout 1000m in 59.8, the final 600 in 34.9.

Ellerslie candidate Lord Belvedere again recorded nice work when covering 800m on the course proper in 49.8, the last 600 in 36.3.

Regal Krona was travelling well at the end of 1200m on the No 2 grass, running the final 1000m in an impressive 1:05, dashing the concluding 600 in 35.6.

Wings On Fire worked well at Te Awamutu.

Working on the plough Wings On Fire covered 1000m in 1:4.3, the last 600 in 35.7.

De Woulf and Dawn Rhapsody took 1:4.7 for their 1000m, the 600 in 37.4.

Impressive runners to sprint over 600m were Hazard and Oscatello who ran 35 and Tadan who clocked 36.
