Racing: Horse of Year share up for grabs

Two per cent smallest available and those 25 shares will be offered around NZ and overseas.

A staggering 50 per cent of New Zealand's champion racehorse Mongolian Khan is being offered for public consumption.

Owner Lang Ling of Inner Mongolia Rider Horse announced at Thursday night's awards dinner in Hamilton he would syndicate part of Mongolian Khan.

Yesterday Lang declared he is prepared to part with half of his $2 million winner.

He said he valued the Horse of the Year at the $10 million that is the reputed syndicated stallion price for four-time group one winner Ocean Park.

The smallest percentage available is 2 per cent and those 25 shares will be offered around New Zealand and overseas.

Mongolian Khan's trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman as well as rider Opie Bosson were honoured at Thursday night's dinner.

The unsung hero in the camp is New Zealand horseman Graeme Forbes, who trains Lang's team in Inner Mongolia.

Forbes picked out Mongolian Khan at the Ready To Run sale and encouraged Lang to go to $220,000 to purchase the colt.

"He was keen to win a Derby and he ended up winning two of them," Forbes said.

Understandably, Lang now has a great affection for New Zealand and New Zealanders.

"He is keen for New Zealand to retain Mongolian Khan, but the syndication will probably dictate that." Lang has an open mind on the stallion's future.

"We have had interest from a lot of studs in Australia to stand him there when he retires, but we would love to keep him in New Zealand.

"Mongolian Khan not only belongs to us, but also all of New Zealand."

Syndicating half of a horse who is a live chance in a Caulfield and Melbourne Cup is virtually unheard of.

Each 2 per cent share includes standing rights to two lifetime services a year when Mongolian Khan eventually retires to stud.

Lang has so far purchased close to 800 horses for China, mostly racing stock, but a significant number of broodmares in foal.

He intends being a big player again at this year's Ready To Run sale.
