Racing: Chance to grab share in top Aussie raider

If you have ever wondered what it would be like to own one of the favourites for a $1 million race now is your chance to find out.

Because a share in one of the Australian raiders on Sunday's Karaka Million at Ellerslie is up for grabs in the days leading up to our richest race.

Victorian filly Sell In May looked every inch the potential favourite for the super sprint when she just shaded fellow visitor Ockham's Razor in a familiarisation gallop at Ellerslie yesterday morning.

But that won't stop her connections selling a 20 per cent share in her pre-race if they can get their asking price.

The John Sadler-trained filly won her only start at Flemington last month and showed a bombproof temperament in yesterday's gallop in which she led and held out her grey rival at the end of 1000m, the final 600m in 35.5, without being pressured.

Both juveniles looked well and handled the track without serious problems, Ockham's Razor only wobbling for a stride at the top of the straight when he changed stride, although he was disadvantaged by being on the outside of the filly.

His stand-in rider and New Zealand Bloodstock rep Danny Rolston said the leggy colt was comfortable throughout, though, and caretaker trainer Lee Freedman was more than pleased with the work.

Sell In May looks the more push-button 2-year-old of the pair, though, and rider Brent Stanley was beaming, although not surprised, after the workout.

"She is a good filly and a real pro," Stanley told the Herald.

"She could have gone much faster and it will take a good horse to beat her on Sunday if she draws well."

Sell In May came from off the speed to win her debut in 57.2 seconds for the straight 1000m at Flemington and Stanley believes she may be the ideal type for Sunday's dash for cash.

"She has real speed and likes to sit just off them, which is often the best place to be in big 2-year-old races where they go so hard. At this stage we couldn't be happier with her."

Ben Melham takes the ride on Sell In May on Sunday with the draw for the race taking place at noon today.

With Sell In May one of the leading chances in the race, the fact that a share in her is up for sale may seem strange but Troy Corstens, who manages the business side of the Sadler stables through Malua Racing, says it makes sense.

"She cost $100,000 at the sales here last year and has obviously developed into the filly the owners were hoping for," said Corstens. "They are traditionally sellers and are keen to recoup some expenses while at the same time keep a large chunk of her because she is a really good filly."

Being by Starcraft from a mare who has already left two handy Australian winners, Sell In May has residual value as a broodmare so it wouldn't surprise to see her have a new partner in the ownership by Sunday.

The Ellerslie track has come through a busy month remarkably well and the superb weather to start the week coupled with some expected showers closer to Sunday should see the surface close to perfect for Sunday's twilight meeting.
