Racing: Bary to chase Aussie riches

Recite earns her trip after Trentham win while Survived can book his seat on Saturday.

Having beaten her male counterparts in the Levin Classic, Recite could take them on again in the Australian Guineas.

The filly beat her John Bary-trained stablemate Franzac in Saturday's Levin Classic (1600m) for 3-year-olds at Trentham to take her record to five wins from nine starts.

It was the daughter of Darci Brahma's first victory of the season after she went through her 2-year-old year unbeaten in four starts, including two group two wins and victory in the Sire's Produce Stakes (1400m) at Awapuni last March.

Bary is looking at Melbourne and Sydney options for Recite, while the Australian Cup (2000m) is on the radar for stablemate Survived.

Bary was to have nominated Recite for the Australian Guineas yesterday, along with Survived in the Australian Cup.

"Whether Recite makes it there or makes it to Sydney, I'm not too sure, but we'll just gauge it on how she's going and go from there."

Bary celebrated group one success in Australia in 2011 with Jimmy Choux who won the Rosehill Guineas and finished second in the Cox Plate.

Survived will line up in the Thorndon Mile at Trentham on Saturday. "It's a handicap race which is not ideal. He's lumping 59kg topweight and is giving the bottom ones 7kg."

"But we've got our eyes on the race two weeks after that, the Darci Brahma International, which is at weight-for-age over 2000m."

The Australian Cup is at Flemington on March 8, a week after the Australian Guineas.

Bary believes Survived is going well enough for a top three finish this weekend.

"If he does that and then he wins his next start, in my mind he's good enough to come and have a run at the Aussie Cup," he said.

Meanwhile, Bary has big ambitions with Franzac after his bold display at Trentham, reports the NZ Racing Desk.

"He's pulled up particularly well and he heads toward the Derby," Bary said. "He's a big, solid and strong horse and he loves the work and racing. He's proved he's up to the big guns."

The winner of two of his seven starts, Franzac may head north to further his preparation.

"He raced a fraction greenly in the straight [at Trentham] and we'll probably go to Te Rapa for the Waikato Guineas, the Avondale Guineas and then on to the Derby."
