Awesome Rock has made up for losing the Australian Cup on protest with a tenacious win in the A$2 million Emirates Stakes at Flemington.
Sent out an $18 chance in the weight-for-age race, Awesome Rock ran to the front at the 300m and then staved off the placegetters for thefourth and most important win in a 25-start career.
Hauraki and Seaburge dead-heated for second.
"He has been a great horse to me and losing the Australian Cup was hard," jockey Stephen Baster said.
"I was very confident coming to this race today. As confident as you can be in a group one," the Victorian said.
Melham filled in for Luke Nolen when Black Caviar won the Melbourne Cup Carnival's major sprint in 2010 - the first group one triumph of the mare's unbeaten career. It was Melham's second group one sprint win during the spring carnival.
