A cricket fan pushed his mate out of the way as he went for a one-handed $100,000 catch last night - only to see the prize slip through his fingers.
The competition has drawn an army of orange-clad fans trying to make one-handed catches of any ball hit for six in an attempt to win $100,000.
Black Caps fan Troy Putt, 22, said karma had "bit me in the arse" after his shove resulted in both friends missing out on the prize, part of a Tui beer promotion, at Eden Park.
Putt managed only to deflect the cricket ball on to another spectator's head, stunning him and knocking him to the ground.
Recalling the moment, Putt said: "I saw my mate going for it and I just thought 'this guy doesn't deserve $100k' so I just pushed him out of the way.
"It was probably a bit of karma. It bit me in the arse."
Putt said he had played a fair bit of "BYC" - backyard cricket - but his fielding skills were impaired by the six or so beers he had consumed.
The speed of the shot, a sweetly struck six by New Zealand batsman Colin Munro, had surprised him.
"It came like a bullet, it comes faster than you think."
Last week, Hamilton man Michael Morton became the first person to win the prize.
DB Breweries, which owns Tui, said 250 orange shirts - required to join the competition - are available at each Black Caps match, and most have sold out.
