Italy’s Laura Pirovano was first up with 1m 24.17s and held top spot until Brignone went into gold position with being sixth down the course.
The silver medallist from 2022, Mirjam Puchner, had a DNF early into her run which started a run of no times. Emma Aicher, who topped the podium almost a month ago in Tarvisio, was also a DNF as was 2018 gold medallist Ester Ledekda, who also missed out on another parallel snowboard gold in Italy.
Pre-race favourite Sofia Goggia was ahead of gold medal pace but also missed a gate for a DNF. After nine down the course only four had set a time. There was mist up the top of the course but it couldn’t be blamed.
Eventually, Austrian duo Cornelia Huetter and Ariane Raedler moved into silver and bronze behind Brignone before France’s Romane Miradoli then jumped into second, knocking Raedler out of the medals.
Downhill gold medallist Breezy Johnson also ended up crashing into the safety netting early in her run but was able to get up and finish the course.
In the end, 17 skiers failed to finish the course.
Robinson will return in the giant slalom on Sunday night into Monday morning NZT.
Tim Cafe, part of Robinson’s coaching staff, said he was happy with the result considering the conditions.
“When we got up in the morning there was obviously a lot of low cloud and fog around but it was cold so it was still frozen. By the time the race came around the temperature spiked and it got a bit soft. Challenging course set, lots of challenges out there for her today.
“Some of it is just about getting the first one out of the way. In these conditions, on that hill in that sort of set, if you told me a year ago she was going to be eighth I would have been over the moon. The expectations were up due to her success in Super-G this year but looking forward to Sunday. I think we’re going to have cold weather. Good clear conditions.”
