Olympics: What to expect on day five

A look towards day five of the 2012 London Olympics and which New Zealand athletes will be competing.

ROWING:
New Zealand's first chance for a medal at Eaton Dorney takes place tonight when Juliette Haigh and Rebecca Scown feature in the women's pairs final at 9.10pm. The duo were outclassed by the Australian pair in the heats but the double world champions say they left a little bit in the tank in their first race at the Games. Britain's Helen Glover and Heather Stanning head into the race as favourites and good chance to win Team GB's first gold. Hamish Bond and Eric Murray return to the water in the men's pairs after an impressive world record effort in the heats while the men's quad also race for a finals spot.

SWIMMING:
Gareth Kean races in the 200m backstroke after failing to reach the final in the 100m. Kean took out the silver at the Commonwealth Games in the 200m and will be aiming for a final berth. He's on the starting blocks at around 9.33pm and the semis, if he qualifies, take place at 6.47am. The only other New Zealanders in the pool are the women's 4x200m freestyle relay team (Amaka Gessler, Tash Hind, Samantha Lucie-Smith, Penelope Marshall) who take part in the heats.

SAILING:
Five crews are in action in Weymouth tonight from 11pm. The men's Star 49er crew of Peter Burling and Blair Tuke are the best placed of the New Zealand boats - sitting in second after 4 of their 15 races.

CYCLING:
Danish import Linda Villumsen has become a consistent minor medallist at world champ time trials and goes into the women's road time trial as a genuine medal contender. Action begins from 11.30pm.

Two hours later Jack Bauer will race in the men's time trial.

CANOE SLALOM:
Mike Dawson will head down the slalom course at 12.30am after qualifying in eighth place during the heats. With 15 taking part in the semis, the top 10 will compete for the medals at 2.15am.

HOCKEY:
The men's hockey team look to bounce back from a first up defeat to Korea when they play India at 12.45am.

FOOTBALL:
While the Oly Whites need a victory over Brazil to have any chance of following their female counterparts into the quarters. That match kicks off at 1.30am.

MEDAL CHANCES?:
All eyes will be on Scown and Haigh just before 11pm to see if they can double New Zealand's medal tally while Villumsen is a real chance to add another.
