Christchurch cyclist Jo Kiesanowski lies in 11th after the first three events of the omnium and will need to produce something special if she is to contend for a medal.
The 33-year-old got off to a bad start, recording the 16th fastest time of 18 riders in the 250m flying
lap. She made up some ground in the 20km points race and elimination race, finishing seventh in both, but might have expected to climb higher considering they are two of her better events.
She sits on 30 points overall, 18 behind co-leaders Tara Whitten (Great Britain) and Sarah Hammer (US) - points are accumulated on the finishing position of each event and added together with the rider with the lowest score winning.
The British procession in the velodrome continued with Jason Kenny winning the men's sprint. Victoria Pendleton (women's sprint), Whitten (omnium) and Sir Chris Hoy (keirin) are among the favourites to win their events.
