KEY POINTS:

Given the number of fourth placings New Zealanders claimed two years ago at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games, the media, jokingly, awarded "tin medals" to those who had just failed to make it to the dais.

Had that been carried over to the Beijing Olympics, New Zealanders would have
laid claim to five such medals.

Those near-misses in the Chinese capital were swimmer Moss Burmester (200m butterfly), double scullers Rob Waddell and Nathan Cohen, BMX star Sarah Walker, rising cycling hope Alison Shanks and kayaking's former silver medallist Ben Fouhy.

While the honours, deservedly, went to the nine medallists, there were 23 other top 10 performances from the 183-strong New Zealand team.

Some sports, notably equestrian, badminton, taekwondo and weightlifting failed to even make the "top half" target set by Sparc and the NZ Olympic Committee, while the team sports never looked likely to get anywhere near the medals with the women's hockey team failing to win a match and the women basketballers winning only their first game.
