KEY POINTS:

Hayden Roulston became the first New Zealand cyclist to win more than one Olympic medal last night - then made a promise.

"It's not finished yet," he said minutes after winning bronze with the 4000m pursuit team at the Laoshan Velodrome in Beijing last night.

It was New
Zealand's sixth medal of the 2008 Games.

Roulston won the silver in the individual pursuit on Saturday, and still has the madison to ride tonight with Greg Henderson.

Only two other riders have won medals on the track for New Zealand - Gary Anderson and Sarah Ulmer.

"It means something for sure, but obviously I didn't come here to try to break records," said Roulston.

"But to walk away with two medals so far - I'm absolutely ecstatic."

The team, with an average age of 23, were convincing winners over Australia in the ride-off for bronze in a time of 3m 57.776s to their rivals' 3m 59.006s.

Great Britain smashed the world record to win gold in 3m 53.314s over Denmark.

As well as Roulston, 27, of Ashburton, New Zealand's team in the bronze ride comprised Rotorua's Sam Bewley, 21, Feilding's Jesse Sergent, 20, and Timaru's Marc Ryan, 25.

But Roulston said the team were bigger than just that squad.

When he sat out the first round on Sunday morning to give him time to recover from the individual pursuit, the team included Westley Gough. Another rider, Peter Latham, was also in the squad.

"On any given day we've got six riders who are world class," said Roulston. "We're like a family. There are no egos and it's very level and everyone gets on great, so it's fantastic."

Bewley said it was important to share the medal with Gough and Latham. "We wouldn't have this medal around our necks if it wasn't for them as well," said Bewley. "Both those guys are great friends. Westley Gough is one of my best mates. He'll be on the top dais with us many times, I'm sure, and so will Pete. Pete came into the team late because he had a serious injury last year, breaking his back."

New Zealand made the bronze medal ride when they posted a national record of 3m 57.536s in beating Spain on Sunday.

They were disappointed not to be in the gold-medal ride, but Roulston said to have won an Olympic medal with a team so young was "unbelievable".

"Those guys are so young they don't even realise what they're doing right now. It's quite phenomenal really to be riding 3.57 and one of the guys is 20," said Roulston.

Sergent said he had "dreamed of this pretty much since I heard of the Olympics as a little kid". He had not expected to win an Olympic medal so early in his career.

Roulston said that tonight's madison ride with Henderson would be tough, but he fancied their chances.

"You still don't have a great night's sleep because you're quite wound up," he said.

"Hendy wants to redeem himself [for his 10th place in the points race on Saturday] so combining those two and I think we've got a pretty good team."

New Zealand Olympic cycling medals:

1992: Gary Anderson, bronze, 4000m individual pursuit

2004: Sarah Ulmer, gold, 3000m individual pursuit

2008: Hayden Roulston, silver, 4000m individual pursuit

2008: Sam Bewley, Marc Ryan, Roulston, Jesse Sergent, bronze 4000m team pursuit.

NB: In 1972 Bruce Biddle finished 4th in the road race and was later promoted to third following the disqualification of Spaniard Jaime Huelamo but has never received the bronze medal.
