NFL player quits game at halftime, announces retirement

Buffalo Bills defensive back Vontae Davis sensationally announced his retirement from the NFL after walking out on his team at halftime in today's loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Bills coach Sean McDermot confirmed after his side's 31-20 defeat that the 10-year veteran told the team during the halftime break that he was done.

The Bills were trailing 28-6 at the time.

"He pulled himself out of the game," McDermott said. "He told us he was done."

The decision came in the side's second game of the season.

Davis released a statement following the defeat, Buffalo's second heavy loss of the 2018 season.

"This isn't how I pictured retiring from the NFL," the statement said.

"But it my 10th NFL season, I have been doing what my body has been programmed to do: get ready to play on game day. I've endured multiple surgeries and played through many different injuries throughout my career and, over the last few weeks, this was the latest physical challenge."

"But today on the field, reality hit me fast and hard: I shouldn't be out there anymore.
