The old firm of jockey Vinny Colgan and trainer Roger James is firing on all cylinders at present and that could continue at the Whakatane Racing Club's meeting at Te Teko tomorrow.
When first apprenticed to James, then becoming his No 1 stable rider, Colgan met with many highlights including victories in the New Zealand Derby and Avondale Gold Cup.
Now after a stint in Singapore, Colgan, though still riding freelance, has linked up again with the James stable and the combination is making its mark.
Colgan had two winners - Aeroforce One and Asclepius - for James and his training partner, Leanne Bertling, at Pukekohe on Wednesday and tomorrow he will ride the stable's two charges, La Strada and Dufresne.
La Strada, an acceptor in the RPC Surveyors Maiden, came close to a win two starts back when just beaten by First Night over 2000m at Matamata, and was unlucky at Paeroa on May 9.
But the best bet from the James-Bertling stable should be Dufresne, a very promising three-year-old named after the main character in the film Shawshank Redemption.
Dufresne looked smart at the trials before running a top race for second in his debut over 1200m at Matamata on April 21, after which he returned to win a trial at Matamata.
The Jugah three-year-old should prove too smart for his rivals in the RD1 Maiden.
