New Zealand tennis number one Marina Erakovic and male compatriot Rubin Statham have crashed out in first round qualifying for the US Open in New York.

Erakovic, the world number 113 has been beaten 7-6,4-6,6-3 by 163rd ranked Chinese player Yafan Wang. The match lasted exactly three hours.

The result continues Erakovic's struggles in New York, her least most successful Grand Slam.

The Kiwi has only once made the second round of the main draw in her career at Flushing Meadows.


Statham ranked 431, who won a wildcard as a result of winning an event in the US, lost 6-7(3) 3-6 in one hour 31 minutes to Duckhee Lee from Korea.

Michael Venus, Marcus Daniell and Artem Sitak all play their doubles main draw matches next week. The tournament starts August 29.
