Netball: Jamaica hold out England to take bronze medal

Jamaica managed to hold on to beat a resurgent England by one goal and claim the bronze medal at the Netball World Championships today.

Jamaica went into the last quarter ahead 43 - 32 but let England back into the game. The crowd came alive cheering on the underdog England.

Jamaica coach Connie Francis said the game was emotional.

"I thought I was going to have heart failure. That was a perfect performance from England. I tell you they really came at us," Francis said.

She praised her team who showed enough strength to hang on for the third place.

England captain Amanda Newton said the comeback was great but it was a shame the team couldn't apply that much pressure in the first quarter of the match.

"We always came here wanting a medal and I think we realised we had to fight for it and we did towards the end but some the passages of play earlier in the game let us down a bit," Newton said.

She said the team is disappointed with leaving the tournament with the same ranking they had at the start, after improving their game.

"Unfortunately so has the other top teams. We've got to keep on working and try and bridge that gap further," said Newton.

She said more international games between the World Champs every four years would help the team.
