Netball: Australia lose player but win match

Australia overcame the last-minute loss of experienced midcourter Rebecca Sanders to beat England 54-41 in the first game of a three-test netball series in Manchester.

Sanders was ruled out of the tour after fracturing her cheekbone in a practice match.

In the test, Australia led 30-23 at halftime with Sharelle McMahon (28 from 32) leading the shooting. The imposing Alex Astle was the best of the England side with 26 from 42.

The test was played at the venue for next year's Commonwealth Games.
