NELSON - The Tasman District Council has agreed to fund up to 80 per cent of a new $1.3 million grandstand at Motueka's Rugby Park.
Construction costs and plans for the 704-seat grandstand and changing rooms were approved at a special council meeting on Friday, paving the way for construction
to begin next month.
Despite a 9 per cent increase in costs during the past year, leading to the revised bill of $1.3 million, the council expressed confidence in the fundraising ability of project backer Good Sport Motueka.
The council is funding up to 80 per cent of the project -- provided Good Sport Motueka can raise the remaining $260,000 from the community.
Good Sport Motueka chairman Barry Dowler said he had no doubt that this was achievable, as $110,000 had already been raised from community donations.
The new grandstand will include eight-team changing rooms, a referees' room, a first aid room and two toilet blocks.
