MONTREAL - Renault's Formula One motor racing world champion Fernando Alonso won the Canadian grand prix today to complete his fourth consecutive victory.
The 24-year-old Spaniard, starting on pole position for the fifth successive race, stretched his overall lead over Ferrari's Michael Schumacher to 25 points at the halfway pointin the 18-race season.
Alonso has 84 points and Schumacher 59.
Seven-time world champion Schumacher, also a seven-time winner in Montreal, finished second, 2.111 seconds adrift of the Renault.
McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen, last year's winner on the island circuit, finished third after ceding second place to Schumacher on the last lap.
Alonso's win was the 14th of his career, his sixth in nine races but his first in North America.
It took his run of podium finishes to 15 in succession and was also the 100th victory in Formula One for Renault's tyre partners Michelin.
Renault teammate Giancarlo Fisichella was fourth, despite a drive-through penalty for jumping the start, with Ferrari's Brazilian Felipe Massa fifth.
Italian Jarno Trulli took his first points of the season, and first in 13 races, with sixth place for Toyota.
BMW Sauber's Nick Heidfeld was seventh and Red Bull's David Coulthard took the final point after starting at the back of the grid due to an unscheduled engine change.
The safety car was twice deployed after drivers hit the unforgiving walls -- Germany's Nico Rosberg in a Williams on lap one and Canada's 1997 world champion Jacques Villeneuve with 11 laps remaining.
