Motorsport: Trio race on in Wheldon tribute

As tributes continued to flow for Dan Wheldon, some V8 Supercar teams are planning to remember the IndyCar driver in their own special way at this weekend's Gold Coast 600.

Alex Tagliani is on the Gold Coast as one of three IndyCar drivers backing up from the horror Las Vegas crash that claimed Wheldon's life. The Canadian is expected to feature a special graphic of Wheldon on his Kelly Racing Commodore this weekend.

It is believed the V8 outfit Wheldon was scheduled to drive for on the Gold Coast - the leading Holden Racing Team - are also preparing a tribute on their two cars this weekend.

While all three IndyCar drivers - Tagliani, Australia's Ryan Briscoe and Brazil's Helio Castroneves - showed great courage to race in honour of Wheldon, their fallen comrade still weighed heavily on Tagliani's heart.

"Thx to all the great support towards Dan, we need to learn, Improve and make drastic changes to our cars, for safety. No holding back," Tagliani tweeted.

Wheldon was a former teammate of Tagliani at IndyCar outfit Sam Schmidt Motorsports. Tagliani allowed the British driver to use his car in the Kentucky round ahead of the Las Vegas season finale.

While Tagliani, Briscoe and Castroneves are confirmed starters this weekend, the pain of racing so soon after Wheldon's death proved too much for Brazil's Tony Kanaan.

"Sorry to all my Australian fans but due to the circumstances I've decided not to do the Surfers V8 race," Kanaan tweeted after pulling out of the Gold Coast event.

Popular Australian driver Will Power was ruled out of the Gold Coast 600 on Monday with back and neck pain after the IndyCar carnage.
