Motorsport: Teammates vital in Toyota Racing Series success

Working with not against teammates could prove to be a short cut to success in this year's Toyota Racing Series.

The five-round one-make championship gets underway this weekend at Ruapuna Raceway in Christchurch with only a 13 cars comprising the field.

That number is down from 20 last season but it means the championship will be close with around half a dozen different drivers tipped to be right at the pointy end.

With so few rivals competing inter-team battles will be fierce.

Southlander Brendon Leitch is returning for fifth TRS campaign this summer and he believes working with the other drivers in his team will be key for getting the best out of his car.

"A teammate is one of the most important pieces of the puzzle," he told The Herald.

"The more you can work together with your teammate and push each other along I think that is where a lot of the time is.

"There is not a lot to change in the set up – the cars are what they are – apart from a few little pieces here and there."

Leitch is driving for the Victory Motor Racing outfit and will have American Cameron Das as a teammate this season.

"It is most important to have a very good teammate and I think I have at least one very good teammate this year," Leitch said.
