The Herald first reported moves were well underway to bring the all-electric championship to the City of Sails last year. A private group, including one of New Zealand's most renowned sports promoters, has made significant headway and there is a feeling of real optimism that the championship will stop in New Zealand next year – possibly as the championship's opening round.
A waterfront track that will have minimal impact on commuter travel has been identified and major sponsors secured with the Giltrap Group linked to the proposal.
Government support would be crucial to any bid from New Zealand but the championship, which features leading global car brands like BMW, Porsche, Audi, Nissan, Mercedes, Jaguar and Mahindra, would be an ideal way for New Zealand to push its sustainable energy capabilities.
The 2018-19 season begins in Saudi Arabia on December 15.
