New Plymouth's Shayne King dominated round one of the SsangYong New Zealand Motocross Championship held at Pleasant Point just outside Timaru yesterday.
The 1996 500cc World Motocross Champion took his Castrol Red Riders Honda CRF 450R to a third and two wins to lead the 500cc Championship from brother Darryl (Hamilton)
on his Yamaha. Castrol Red Rider team-mate Corrie Sargent came home third.
King continued his dominance in the 250cc class with two wins, but ran into a problem in the third race, which left him second overall. King was ably supported by team-mate Peter Bloxholme with two thirds.
The Red Riders were not so lucky in the 125cc class, with Cody Cooper getting caught up in an incident. The class was dominated by Hawera's Daryl Hurley (Suzuki) who has just returned from racing in the USA.
In the new open women's class, Katherine Prumm (Kawasaki) beat Elyse Wadsworth (Yamaha) and Mary Perkins (Honda).
