Ferrari unveiled its stunning new 2019 car but F1 fans were stunned by the colour with the traditional red looking somewhat orange.

The SF90 was launched with the hope to take Sebastian Vettel and new teammate Charles Leclerc to the next level.

After Vettel finished second behind champion Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari finished second behind Mercedes in three of the last four constructor championships, it is hoped the new car will see Ferrari once again become the powerhouse.

New Scuderia Ferrari managing director Mattia Binotto said the car, named to honour the team's 90th anniversary, will look to improve on last years' result.

"I think the car is a development of last year's car, it's not a revolution," Binotto said. "I think we simply tried to push again, raise the bar, raise the level, tried to be as extreme as we could."

But the release of the car sparked an online debate in F1 circles that was similar to 2015s 'The Dress' and countless others since with people wondering whether it was red or orange.

Ferrari had been teasing a deeper red in the lead up to the unveiling.

Ferrari had been teasing a deeper red in the lead up to the unveiling.

But the first images coming out of the car were striking for F1 fans who felt the colours looked orange.

The traditional Ferrari red is a coveted feature of the car over its 90 year F1 history.

It meant fans were quick to jump on any perceived move away from the much-loved colour.

Orange?? Where is my Ferrari?

— JensFrandsen (@Jensfrandsen67) February 15, 2019

Wonderful, think @ScuderiaFerrari created a real masterpiece with the #SF90!!😍👌

Time 'll tell, but surely hope the lady's performance 'll match her looks.🔥😋😜

Can't figure out her colour though: red or more orange!? Or does it depend on the light?🤔😉#F1 #ferrari #F12019 pic.twitter.com/lScNnQk56f

Roses are red,
This car is orange,
Whatever you say,
This color is strange.

— Sky Sports F1 (@SkySportsF1) February 15, 2019

It was however, simply just a trick of the lights that made the famous car look so deceiving. According to one ESPN reporter.

‘Yeah the thing with the new Ferrari right is that it looks orange but it’s actually the lights they used on launch so there’s nowt to worry about if you’re a traditionalist like’ #F1 pic.twitter.com/zfatu9YPZX

All tricks of the light aside, Ferrari are desperate to challenge for the title in 2019. Since there last champion driver came all of 12 years ago, dating back to Kimi Raikkonen in 2007.

The 31-year-old Vettel is the lead driver again for Ferrari, with Charles Leclerc replacing Raikkonen on the team.

With Leclerc highly rated in F1 circles and expected to challenge Vettel, 2009 world champion and Sky Sports pundit Jenson Button even said Vettel could have "a tough decision" to make, similar to when Daniel Ricciardo arrived at Red Bull.

But Vettel said he expects to finish his contract at Ferrari.

"It's quite known that my contract goes until 2020 so, don't expect anything else," Vettel said.

"I'm very happy here. Obviously my goal is to win the championship. We were not getting as close as we want, so there's still a job to do, and I feel that's my mission and the reason why I'm here, for myself, for the team.

"Obviously, I like driving, I love driving, I've got a great passion for driving, but on top of that I've got a great passion for this team, for Ferrari, inspired throughout my whole childhood."

Vettel knows Leclerc will be pushing but said he doesn't expect there to be any issues with the 21-year-old up and comer.

Vettel, a four-time world champion, said the team "is on the right path".

Aske whether he was nervous, Leclerc said he has plenty to learn from Vettel.

"Nervous? Not," he said.

"I think it's more of an opportunity for me to be next to Sebastian, who is such a champion. I can definitely learn a lot from him so I see it more as an opportunity. I'm pretty sure it will be an amazing season.

"The key will be to work all together but I'm sure we'll make it."

The SF90 will hit the track at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya on Monday for the opening winter test.
